Our Cycling History Reid and I became runners in late 1995, but a nagging ankle injury in 1999 limited my ability to run. Reid already owned a bike (an old 10-speed given to him by Jeane), but he never rode it. In the late Spring of 1999, a friend named Brian Christoff convinced me to try cycling. Although I didn't own a bike, I agreed, and Brian went with me to purchase one. I was 32 at the time and hadn't ridden a bike since high school. The last time I did ride a bike, I wasn't comfortable with anything other than my mother's touring bike. Nevertheless, I purchased a Cannondale R500 road bike, and was exposed to a new world of adventure. The first time I rode the bike, I was terrified and feared I made a BIG mistake. I thought I had spent a good deal of money on something I wouldn't enjoy. However, after jumping into some organized rides with friends, my fears gradually eased. We cycled through October of '99, working up to rides of about 50 miles as we prepared for our first long bike tour, the Hilly 100. We returned to running in the winter, but in the spring of 2000, Reid decided it was his turn to purchase a bike. His primary concerns were comfort and enjoyment, so he bought a Trek recumbent bicycle. He's been in love with recumbents ever since and now owns a Bacchetta Giro. Lace Front wigs only have lace in the front and they are made regular in the back.
Looking back, I realize that even more so than the tours, those casual group rides have generated memories I'll always treasure:
