Our First Marathon

After running in mini-marathons and various other races for four years, we were wondering what we could do next.  After discussing the possibility with Patti & Jeane, we decided to attempt our first full marathon (26.2 miles). All that remained was to decide on a marathon destination.  We looked through a book that rates marathons, and selected the Walt Disney World Marathon, in Orlando FL.

The race received an excellent rating for beauty, spectators, appropriateness for first-timers, and was reasonably flat.  Oh, and let's not forget that the course winds through Epcot, the Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, and MGM Studios!!!

Compared to the training, the marathon was a piece of cake.  We were there to have fun.  As the race approached though, a few bad omens came our way. Reid broke a finger sledding the day before the race, our flight was delayed due to snow, Patti fell down in the airport, and I had a cold and threw out my back coughing the night before the race. Miraculously, we all finished the race.

We ran very slowly (partly due to the large crowd of runners), carried small cameras in our running packs and stopped to take pictures along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment!  I will definitely run in another marathon (if I can convince my pals to join me!).

Part of what made this race so special is that my mother, sister Laura, and my brother-in-law Lane all flew to Orlando to watch us run the marathon.

Some of my favorite memories include:

bullet

The sea of runners taking a last-minute bathroom break in the woods at 5am.

Goofing off with all the Disney "characters" during the race,

bullet

Seeing Cinderella's castle come into view and running through the middle of it,

bullet

The different bands, the motorcycle gang, and the wonderful water stops,

bullet

The cheering spectators (particularly my family) and park workers,

bullet

The medical tents (thank God for Advil and analgesic cream!),

bullet

Seeing the finish line come into view,

Crossing the finish line hand-in-hand with Reid,

Having the finisher's medal placed around my neck,

Watching Patti and Jeane finish.
