The Hangover Classic takes place annually, on New Year's
Day. The race starts and ends near River Road in Louisville. The race is
ten miles and is a relatively flat course.
The most memorable Hangover Classic for me was in 1999. It
was the year Patti, Jeane, and I volunteered instead of running. We signed
up to work at a water stop, but the water had been stolen before we
arrived. Since we couldn't give out water, we gave out
encouragement. We yelled for every single runner that passed. It was
such a cold day, many of the men had icicles hanging from their sideburns,
beards, and mustaches. As we yelled for the runners at the 8-mile mark, we
saw huge smiles spread to their tired, determined faces. We wished them
all a Happy New Year and received many words of thanks and celebration in
return.
