The Red River Gorge Geological Area consists of approximately 26,000 acres located within the Daniel Boone National Forest. The gorge is located near Slade, KY. My family has hiked and camped in this area for years. There are scenic drives with overlooks, hiking trails, historic sites, picnic areas, and camping. It offers many unique varieties of vegetation and natural rock formations. The Red River Gorge contains the most natural rock formations in one concentrated area east of the Rocky Mountains. The Red River Gorge is also a very popular place for rock climbers. Another unique feature to the area is the 19.4 miles of the Red River which runs through the gorge. It has been designated as a wild and scenic river. It offers beautiful canoeing and good whitewater. Yet another attraction is the gorge's neighbor, the Natural Bridge State Park. This park is centered around one of the many natural rock formations found in the area.
